Disability Studies Events at AMS (repost)

We are very excited that Disability Studies has a strong presence at the upcoming Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society in Pittsburgh (November 7–11), including the three following events:

“Music and Disability on Screen” (Thursday evening at 8 p.m. in Rivers)

A special panel with papers by James Deaville, Stephanie Jensen-Moulton, Jeanette DiBernardo Jones, and Kendra Preston Leonard. Congratulations to Kendra and her team on organizing this important event.

Music & Disability Study Group Meeting (Friday evening at 8 p.m. in Grand Ballroom 4)

At its meeting, the Music & Disability Study Group will host a workshop and discussion forum on four papers. The papers are available from the presenters, and attendees are encouraged to read and prepare responses to them in advance. We’ll begin with a brief introduction to Disability Studies for those who are new to the field.

After the workshop, the Study Group will host a brief business meeting to discuss ongoing projects related to accessibility issues, mentorship, and professional support.

Breakfast Meeting (Saturday morning at 8 a.m., location TBA)

The Study Group will also host an informal breakfast meeting, the location of which will be announced on this blog and during the above events. At this informal meeting we hope to build a more cohesive Study Group, so please bring an interested friend or colleague. We’ll also discuss initiatives for next year’s joint AMS/SMT meeting.

Please let us know (by posting below or e-mailing Blake Howe or Stephanie Jensen-Moulton) if there any initiatives that you’d like the Study Group to focus on this year. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh.
