This is the blog of the music and disability interest group of the Society for Music Theory and the study group of the American Musicological Society. We are scholars with interdisciplinary interests in music and disability studies. Don’t know what Disability Studies is, or what it could possibly have to do with music? Blake Howe’s Primer is a great place to start. Our groups pursue many scholarly initiatives–conference papers and panels, articles, books. We also advocate for inclusion and accessibility for scholars, particularly within our professional organizations. Finally, we advocate for our students with differing abilities and make accommodations in our pedagogy and teaching.

This site features announcements about forthcoming publications and conference activities, and also features blog posts on topics of interest to music and disability studies. In addition to this blog, you can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Information about upcoming academic activities and discussions pertaining to music and disability topics are regularly shared on the Music and Disability Listserv, DISMUS-L. To participate and subscribe to our listserv, send an e-mail to LISTSERV@GC.LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU with the command (paste it into the e-mail message body): SUBSCRIBE DISMUS-L. Once you have joined, the address for correspondence is DISMUS-L@GC.LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU.

The chair of the DISMUS interest group of the Society for Music Theory is Anabel Maler (University of Iowa). The co-chairs of the DISMUS study group of the American Musicological Society are Jeannette Jones (Holy Cross) and Stefan Honisch (UBC). The webmaster is Benjamin Coghan (University of Texas), James Deaville (Carleton University) moderates the blog, and Elizabeth McLain (Virginia Tech) is the secretary. Please contact us!

  1. I can’t find an email to contact, but wondered if you would be interested in posting about a documentary we’re working on about the UK’s only blind orchestra, Inner Vision? You can watch the trailer here: http://www.innervisionfilm.co.uk/
They’re an incredibly diverse and wonderful group of musicians from all over the world, who come together and make fantastic music. We launched a kickstarter last month for the documentary, which will tell the amazing stories about these people, and so are trying to spread the word! If you’d like to email us, please do at info@innervisionfilm.co.uk. Many thanks!
